Bachelor of Oral Health/Science Scholarship

A Victorian Government initiative

The Department of Health is currently offering Scholarships to support students undertaking the Bachelor of Oral Health/Science at either La Trobe University or Melbourne University.

These Scholarships are available to final year students in Oral Health Therapy who demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in a public dental clinic upon completion of their degree.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are encouraged to apply.

If successful, students will be contracted to work for a period of 12 months* in a public dental clinic in metropolitan or rural Victoria after graduation, providing dental care to children, adolescents and/or adults. Scholarship recipients will be required to work in a rural location in need.

Scholarship details

Oral Health Therapy undergraduates: the Scholarship is valued at $12,000 (taxable income) per annum full-time equivalent and is payable following confirmation of enrolment in the third and final year of study.

This Scholarship is open to final year Undergraduate students only, who:

  • Have an academic record that is assessed as acceptable by the Dental Health Services Victoria and of a high standard
  • Can demonstrate a strong commitment to providing public dental services in Victoria
     

Successful applicants will be required to enter in to a written agreement stating that they will:

  • Work in a public dental clinic within 12 months of graduation for a period of 12 months*
  • Promote the public dental service as a viable career choice to students
  • Repay Scholarship funding received with interest at market rates if they fail to comply with the conditions of the agreement
     

(*If done through part-time employment then the Scholarship recipient would be required to work a minimum 2.5 days for 24 months)

Submissions for 2012 close on the 19th September 2011.

Scholarships awarded will be ongoing for the 12 month period, subject to a review of the recipient’s progress and compliance with the Scholarship criteria.

Short-listed applicants will be required to attend an interview in Melbourne in September, the date to be advised by Dental Health Services Victoria.

You must submit 2nd year exam results via email at the end of the semester as well as your 2012 enrolment confirmation prior to the start of 3rd year. Both exam results and your 2012 enrolment confirmation are required in order to be awarded a scholarship and receive payment.

Applications must be accompanied by:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • An essay of 500 words, outlining:
    • Demonstrated understanding of the professional and personal issues involved in delivering public dental services and a commitment to bonded public dental service following graduation
    • Written and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work effectively with a range of health professionals in a team or solitary environment
    • An understanding of how a period of employment in a public dental service can contribute to a professional career path
    • Demonstrated organisational skills, displaying initiative and self motivation to successfully complete the tertiary course in the minimum time period
