What is involved in the Dental Assistant Traineeship program?
The Dental Assistant Traineeship program (offered by Dental Health Services Victoria in conjunction with RMIT) provides formal training to become a qualified dental assistant.
Trainees will be employed on a fixed term, full-time basis for approximately 13 months and on completion, will receive Certificate III in Dental Assisting.
Practical requirements
You will undertake a 2 week induction program of lectures and clinical observations before commencing clinical rotations for the duration of the program.
A 3 week allocation at a community dental clinic will be part of your training.
Study requirements
You will be enrolled at RMIT to complete compulsory off-the-job learning and training. You will be required to attend four 1 week study block releases, involving:
- didactic
- simulated practical components
- assessments
- oral presentations
- assignments
You will have 2.5 study days per month to support your school work load and you are encouraged to dedicate a minimum of 5 hours of personal time to study. Study allocation is conducted during working hours and on site at The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.

Workplace assessment
Prior to completion, a clinical assessment will take place in the workplace to assess clinical and theoretical competencies. You will be expected to demonstrate excellent clinical skills as well as theoretical knowledge.
On completion of this program, you will receive the Certificate III in Dental Assisting and are then welcome to apply for vacancies within The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.

RDHM recruits 2 participants for the Dental Assistant Traineeship program 6 times per year.
