Orientation Training Course (OTC)

Orientation Training Course (OTC) short programs have been designed by Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) to assist international dental graduates to refresh knowledge and skills before sitting the Australian Dental Council (ADC) final examination.

The programs are also appropriate for international dental graduates who have sat the ADC final examination but were unsuccessful, or who have been granted a Supplementary Examination.

In this section:

 
Theory program – commencing 4 June 2012

Applications for this program must be received prior to Monday 28 May 2012.

This program is aimed at assisting overseas qualified dentists in preparing for either the ADC Preliminary or Clinical Examinations in refreshing their theoretical knowledge. Please note that the emphasis of this program is on clinical aspects.

The full time program will be scheduled from Monday 4 June – Friday 29 June 2012, with lectures conducted generally between 9.00am and 5.00pm Mondays to Fridays.

Total Cost - $4,000.00 payable eight weeks prior to commencement date.

Venue - The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne building, 720 Swanston Street, Carlton, Victoria 3053.

The prerequisites for attendance will be:

  • Eligible to proceed with the ADC examination process and hold a current ADC reference number 
  • Passed OET or its equivalent

Restorative dentistry program - 2 weeks (end of October) or 3 weeks (September & October)

This program provides participants with hands-on opportunity to practice specific restorative techniques including cavity preparation and restorations with amalgam and composite, preparation of teeth for inlays / overlays, crowns and bridges and endodontic exercises on extracted teeth mounted in a plaster block, as well as providing the opportunity for discussion with demonstrators. All clinical work is performed on dental manikins providing participants with a safe environment to practice and consolidate their skills in preparation for undertaking the ADC clinical exam. Columbia ivorine adult teeth, Columbia models and Nissin manikins are used by the OTC Unit.

OPTECH sessions will be scheduled in the evening at 5.30pm - 8.30pm. Students will be expected to attend the full 2 week or 3 week program.
 

SEMESTER 2 - program dates 2012:
Monday 27 August – 14 September 2012 (3 weeks)
Monday 1 October to 19 October (3 weeks)
Monday 22 October to 2 November (2 weeks)

General dentistry program - 8 Weeks

The eight week program consists of series of preclinical and clinical sessions, lectures, tutorials and individual study sessions scheduled Monday to Friday during the day and the evening.

This program is designed to refresh and develop the clinical knowledge and skills fundamental to the practise of general dentistry. Specifically designed to provide participants with a supportive environment to practice and consolidate their skills, completion of this program will assist in preparation for undertaking the ADC clinical exam. To maximise the learning experience, candidates are encouraged to read appropriate textbooks/articles and prepare a few questions before attending every session.

This program includes preclinical and clinical sessions on:

  • Restorative dentistry including direct and indirect restorations and endodontics (preclinical) 
  • Radiology (preclinical and clinical sessions) 
  • Exodontia (clinical sessions ) 
  • Periodontia (clinical sessions)
  • Selected tutorial topics such as removable prosthodontics, periodontics, exodontia, paedodontics and oral pathology.
     
SEMESTER 2 - program dates 2012:
Monday 2 July – 24 August 2012day and evening sessions
Tuesday 10 September – 2 November 2012day and evening sessions

Fee: $12,000 plus applicable Limited Registration fee (payable to AHPRA), plus fees associated with Working with Children Check and Police check.

Note: Candidates attending clinical sessions and treating patients must provide a current Police Check and hold current temporary registration (AHPRA) The required forms will be provided by the OTC office. Candidates are responsible for sending all relevant document and fees directly to AHPRA. This process takes at least 6-8 weeks.

Supplementary training

These individually tailored sessions are ideal for candidates who have sat the ADC final examination and were granted a Supplementary examination in CD2 (Clinical Dentistry 2 - Periodontics and Removable Prosthodontics) and CD3 (Clinical Dentistry3 - Oral Surgery, Oral Diagnosis and Oral Radiology). CD1 Supplementary candidates refer to Restorative Program details.

The programs consist of tutorials, selected preclinical or clinical sessions or combination of these in various disciplines of dentistry depending on individual requirements and availability of places.

Fees: Depend on individual requirements and availability of the sessions. Applicants should contact the OTC office to discuss requirements.

Please note: Programs and fees are subject to change and applicants should check with the OTC Office in relation to programs offered at the time of application.

Selection criteria for restorative, general dentistry and supplementary programs

As these short programs are designed to assist in preparing for the ADC exam, we require participants to:

  • hold a current ADC reference number and be eligible to sit the clinical examination. 
  • have passed the OET (Occupational English Test). 
  • have passed the ADC MCQ Preliminary examination. 
  • have a current visa allowing them to stay in Australia for the duration of the short program or be eligible to apply for a visa

Other requirements

Candidates who attend clinical sessions and treat patients will be required to obtain the following documentation. Details of how to obtain this documentation will be provided by the OTC unit if you are accepted into the program. Fees apply.

  • Temporary Registration with AHPRA to participate in clinical sessions. A registration fee applies and is paid directly to AHPRA
  • Working with Children Check
  • Criminal Records Check (Police Check)

  • Part B Application and Payment Forms

A non-refundable deposit of $150 must accompany applications for all courses. Payment must be made by cash, credit card, cheque or postal note.

2013 Courses 

It is anticipated that dates for 2013 will be availale in early August 2012. Applicants should email OTC and request 2013 Course Information Package.
