
The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry (formerly known as the OTC 20 week program) runs over 20 weeks and is delivered by the University of Melbourne in partnership with Dental Health Services Victoria.
*This course does not currently have a CRICOS code but we expect to have CRICOS registration for Semester 1, 2010 enrolments.
Course objectives
The objectives of this course are to help you understand dentistry practices in Australia and provide the opportunity for you to update your existing skills and knowledge. The course also aims to develop your communication, presentation and patient management skills to a level appropriate for Australian general dental practice.
Course program
The 20 week program includes four subjects and consists of:
- lectures (4 weeks)
- tutorials, pre-clinical and clinical experience at The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne (16 weeks).
Following completion of the Graduate Certificate, you will be required to independently undertake (and pass) the ADC examinations before you can apply to the Dental Practice Board of Victoria for permission to practice general dentistry in Australia.
General entry requirements
Applicants are required to meet the following entry requirements:
- Successful completion of an undergraduate dental degree recognised by the University of Melbourne.
- Evidence of registration (or eligibility for registration) as a dentist in your home country or the country in which your dental studies were undertaken.
- Demonstrated competency in English language skills by one of the means recognised by the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences (click here for further details on the available options).
- Achievement of the minimum level of dental skills, as determined by the skills assessment undertaken by Dental Health Services Victoria.
- Evidence that you are eligible to proceed with the Australian Dental Council examination process.

Skills assessment
The skills assessment for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry for semester 1, 2010, is scheduled for Monday 16th, Tuesday 17th & Wednesday 18th November 2009.
If you wish to undertake the skills assessment, you must submit an application form with the supporting information by the closing date. The application form and submission date are available on the University of Melbourne web page.
All candidates who are offered a place in the skills assessment will be required to attend The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne on the afternoon of Monday 16 for a three hour written component. For the clinical component, candidates will be rostered over the three day period. Candidates will be advised of their scheduled attendance times at a later stage.
Assessment Fees
The skills assessment costs $200 and is payable directly to Dental Health Services Victoria.
This cost will be deducted from the fees of all students that are offered (and accept) a place in the course.
