Emergency dental care is available at RDHM at these times:
|Monday to Friday||8:15am to 9:15pm|
|Weekends and public holidays||8:45am to 9:15pm|
Outside of the above times, please contact the emergency department of a hospital near you.
When patients turn up at the hospital they will be asked a series of questions about the severity of their illness, injury or pain. This is called Triage.
Triaging patients allows us to understand which dental emergencies require more urgent treatment than others.
Triage is performed by experienced staff and senior clinical staff are at hand to assist when required. If your condition needs urgent care, you will be treated within 24 hours. Patients with less urgent problems may be offered an appointment on another day. This is why we recommend you call us first to be triaged, before coming to the hospital.
At emergency appointments, the dentist will aim to reduce or stop the pain experienced. Only the most severe problem will be treated at the emergency appointment. Multiple problems are unable to be addressed in an emergency appointment. Patients with the most serious dental problems must be treated first. Sometimes, after a visit to the Emergency Department, more dental treatment may be required. If you are eligible for public dental services, a community dental clinic can provide this service for you, although there will be a waiting time. Eligible patients may also be waitlisted for follow-up treatment at RDHM.
The cost of treatment depends on your circumstances. The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne’s primary purpose is to provide care to current health care card and pension card holders. Whilst emergency dental services are available to all Victorians patients without a concession card will be charged as a private patient and private health funds will not accept claims for reimbursement of these fees. Please refer to our fees page for details.
