Building healthier futures with Balibo Dental Clinic

Publish date:

Our ongoing commitment to the Balibo Dental Clinic in Timor-Leste is all about building capability, supporting prevention, and improving health outcomes.

On Monday 14 July, Oral Health Victoria signed an agreement to extend funding for another three years to support the Balibo House Trust and the Balibo Dental Clinic in Timor-Leste.

Oral Health Victoria has a long and enduring relationship with the clinic. Funded by the Balibo House Trust, the Balibo Dental Clinic was opened to the public in 2016 and is staffed by volunteer dentists from Australia who are registered with the Australian Dental Board.

The clinic improves the oral health of the local population by providing access to dental treatment, community education and prevention programs, including a mobile dental service for more remote areas.

Tucked behind the Balibo 5 Community Learning Centre, the small clinic has quietly become a lifeline — offering care, comfort, and connection to thousands. Led by Dr Octavia Amaral and dental nurse Sidonia da Silva Tilman, it doesn’t just treat teeth, it builds trust, confidence, and healthier futures.

Supported by Rotary, the Ministry of Health, and a passionate network of Australian dental volunteers, the clinic is a true community effort, where knowledge is shared, skills are built, and care runs deep.

Oral Health Victoria is proud to continue walking alongside our partners, with support from the Victorian Department of Health. This is a long-term investment in local skills, systems, and better health outcomes.

Thanks to James Kelly, John Milkins, Monica Ferrie, Dr. Octavia Amaral and Nicole Rees for being part of the signing.
