Learning locally to strengthen skills

Basic surgical extraction skills were taught to a group of enthusiastic dentists in a regional setting recently.
An exciting new DHSV pilot program provided regional clinicians with the hands-on opportunity to strengthen their surgical skills.
The training was held in the Ballarat Clinic of Grampians Health on Saturday 10 May. Dentists working in the regional community public oral health sector snapped up their spots and the chance to increase their knowledge.
Taking their talents on the road, the training was delivered by Director Surgery and Oral Medicine Dr Krati Garg, OMFS Consultant Warren Crossley, and Dental Assistant Narelle Harvey.
Krati, Warren, and Narelle welcomed the opportunity to share their expertise with the passionate group of participants.
“It was a really fulfilling experience teaching basic surgical extraction skills to a group of enthusiastic dentists from Ballarat,” said Krati.
“The regional patient cohort often struggles with accessing specialist care, both time and distance wise, and these kind of learning opportunities definitely help in addressing some of those simpler surgical extractions locally and timely.”
Donning gloves, gowns, and goggles (loupes), the clinicians progressed from theory to practical demonstrations complete with resources including tongues and manikin heads.
Delivering the training in the local region not only removed the need to travel to the city, but it also provided participants with a familiar environment that may be more conducive to learning.
“The participants really enjoyed the session and did say that learning in their own environment consolidated some of the skills developed during the session,” said Krati.
DHSV is proud to support the professional development of these oral health professionals, with the ultimate aim of improving patient care by providing more clinicians with the opportunity to learn new skills.
